Who's cold?!? MEEEEEEE!!!

I don't do too well in the cold, I'm an old, arthritic, crazy cat lady. You'll see me getting around in my Pole Ugg boots, long pants, 2-3 jumpers, a scarf, beanie and fingerless gloves. Not even exaggerating! What you won't see me doing is sitting around on my butt doing nothing in a blankie - that just makes you colder and fatter! Here's my top 'winter warmer' tips for staying warm and fit through the colder months.

  1. Layers, lots of layers. I mentioned above how much I wear. This way I can just strip a layer at a time until I'm comfortable without having that initial freeze-shock. Yuk.
  2. Soups, stews and casseroles. There's no need to reach for the "comfort food" its junk and you know it. Instead of salad have your veggies in the form of soups, roasted, steamed or mashed. It warms you up from the inside! My current favourite is vegetarian laksa - Soooooooo good! It's also amazing with chicken and bean curd!
  3. Hot toddy. Yeah this one is not so healthy, but everything in moderation right? Besides a bit of whisky is good for keeping the colds away. Herbal teas instead of cold water during winter  are the best way to stay hydrated without the caffeine hit. My favourite non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic teas are the T2 sleepy tea before bed, rooibos and peppermint tea. If you've never had rooibos tea before try it with a tiny bit of honey, the earthy taste is an acquired one.
  4. Exercise. Get your blood moving! If you warm up on the inside you're more likely to stay warmer for longer. True story. I recommend either an intense cardio session or Pilates because you can wear lots of clothing to start and strip off as you warm up. Pilates has the added benefit of distraction; you have to concentrate hard on your correct muscle activation which means you're not thinking about being cold!
